Why it's worth doing
Thumbnails are judged at roughly the size of a postage stamp, surrounded by competitors, by someone who isn't paying attention. You cannot evaluate your own thumbnail under those conditions, because you already know what it says.
Scoring catches the failures that are invisible when you're the designer:
- Text that's unreadable below a certain size
- A focal point that dissolves into the background
- Too many competing elements
- Low contrast that vanishes against YouTube's interface
Using it well
Score early, not as a final rubber stamp. The point is to change the thumbnail, so run it while you're still willing to.
If a note doesn't fit your channel's style, ignore it — it's a strong second opinion, not a rule. But if the same criticism appears across several of your thumbnails, that's a pattern worth taking seriously.
